Dcn. Martin Hetzel

I’m Deacon Martin Hetzel, a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of Denver. Most parishioners know me as Deacon Marty. Archbishop Aquila assigned me to Nativity of Our Lord on January 1, 2016. Previously, I served at St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish in Boulder.

I was ordained as a permanent deacon on September 27, 1980, for the Diocese of Joliet-in-Illinois. My first assignment was at St. Pius X Parish in Lombard, IL, and my next assignment was at St. John Neumann Parish in St. Charles, IL.

My wife, Valerie, and I were married in 1964. We have six children, four children-in-law, several grandchildren and a great-grandchild. In 2009, we sold our home and moved to Colorado to reside near some of our family members.

Most permanent deacons are not employees of the Church, so we support ourselves and our families through secular employment. I am retired from my career that spanned forty years in corporate information systems at several different companies.

A favorite bible verse is, “We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him” (1 John 4:16).
